Playtest Guide: Quotas & Items

Survive the Escape from Playtime playtest with an 11-minute shift plan, monster counters, item tips, and demerit rules for the co-op beta.

What the Escape from Playtime Playtest Actually Is

The Escape from Playtime playtest drops you and up to seven friends into a procedurally shuffled Playtime Co. factory with an 11-minute clock and a shipping quota to hit. If your last shift ended face-first in a gas cloud while a monster you didn't recognize chewed through your stamina bar, you're in the right place. This is a co-op survival horror game built inside the Poppy Playtime universe, and the beta build is deliberately incomplete — which means knowing the rules matters more than raw reflexes.

The Escape from Playtime playtest casts you as a Smiling Critter, a small creature in a very large building. Before anything else, note the biggest structural limit: matchmaking is restricted to Steam friends. There are no public lobbies here, unlike Project Playtime, so line up your group in advance. The beta also drops lore, several puzzles, some enemies, and part of the critter roster — those pieces are reserved for the fuller version.

Playtest detailWhat you get right now
Player count2–8 in co-op survival horror; solo, duo, and squads all work
Lobby typeSteam friends only — no open/public matchmaking
Shift length11 minutes, then a gas evacuation phase
Content stateNo lore, partial puzzle set, partial enemy set, partial critter roster
TutorialBuilt into the main menu with its own map
Main menuHost game, join game, single player, settings, quit
Map layoutRandomized on every run

Run the tutorial once even if you're confident. It teaches critter movement and climbing on a dedicated map, and it covers more of the fundamentals than a single shift will. The hub also has a throwing practice area with props and basketballs — worth five minutes, since throwing items is how you knock a poison flyer off a teammate and free someone from Bunzo.

Also worth knowing: the playtest hub includes a shop that isn't open yet and a TV room that isn't active. Don't burn time trying to interact with them.

How a Shift Works: Quotas, Barry, and the Clock

Your job each run is simple to state and hard to execute: pick up scrap, parts, and tools scattered around the map, haul them to Barry, and ship them off to satisfy the tribute quota. The mysterious Voice watching from above is your customer, and the quota bar sits along the bottom of your screen. When the number above Barry turns green after a shipment, you've hit the required tribute. Globy, your floating helper, calls out when you reach the halfway mark.

Barry doesn't reload instantly. After you send a shipment, he takes a little while to come back, so avoid dumping a full inventory the second you arrive. Stage your loot nearby, top up in batches, and be considerate about timing. There are two Barry stations per map: the one you start near, and a second room you unlock by solving a puzzle or minigame.

Shift systemHow it worksPractical tip
Shift timer11 minutes per runCheck remaining time with Globy often
QuotaDeposit items into Barry to fill the barGreen number above Barry = quota met
Halfway alertGloby announces progressUse it to decide whether to explore or bank
Gas phaseBuilding fills with gas; 1 minute to escapeMemorize Barry's location early
Barry downtimeShipments take time to returnBank in batches, not one huge dump
ExitsStarting elevator plus a slide near the second Barry roomKnow the nearest exit before gas starts
Demerits3 = gas pit punishmentNever leave early unless you must

If you bail out early, a tube near the exit shows how long the players still inside have left. Use the two exits to your advantage — the slide by the second Barry room frequently beats the elevator back to the surface.

Three map-reading habits save runs. First, the top-right corner of your screen shows the current area name, so use it for callouts over proximity chat. Second, your teammates' statuses sit in the top-left, and a blood-splattered portrait means they're dead. Third, the lever near a deposit point shuts the gate for a few seconds, which is exactly enough time to bank loot while something is chasing you.

Every Monster and How to Counter It

The Escape from Playtime playtest ships with a small but nasty enemy lineup. Mr. Light is the headline threat; the rest are roaming hazards that punish bad positioning. Death itself triggers a CatNap jumpscare, so expect at least one cheap scare per session.

ThreatBehaviorCounter
Mr. LightCharges at high speed; much faster than her single-player counterpartKeep your flashlight beam on her to freeze her; the moment you look away or click off, she lunges
Buzzing poison flyerFlies around audibly; poisons on contact and sticks to youHave a teammate throw an item at her to knock her off; drink an antidote for the poison
Boogie BotCreeper — spots you with its lights, sounds an alarm, charges, then explodesBreak line of sight, put a gate or door between you, and stay out of the blast on impact
BunzoHangs from the ceiling and drops on anyone walking underneath, dragging them upTeammates can throw an item to free you, but he then roams freely — clear the area first
CatNapAppears as the death jumpscareNo combat counter; avoid dying

The gate lever deserves special mention against Mr. Light. If you're carrying tribute and she's closing in, seal the gate, deposit, and reset. Your flashlight is your only reliable answer to her, which makes battery management a combat mechanic rather than a convenience.

Stamina, Light, and Survival Basics

Stamina is the resource that ends most playtest runs. Everything athletic — sprinting, jumping, climbing — drains it, and it does not regenerate fast enough to spam movement. You can climb essentially anything: walls, bookshelves, stray ropes, crates. That freedom is your escape route, but every hold costs stamina, so plan two-move climbs instead of scrambling.

Red gas is worse than a temporary drain. Any gas you walk through permanently eats into your stamina bar, and when that red section fills the bar completely, you're finished. That applies to the gas that floods the building at the end of a shift, so escaping isn't optional.

Survival mechanicDetailAction
StaminaLimited pool drained by run, jump, climbWalk more than you sprint; drink an energy drink for a short unlimited burst
Red gasPermanently reduces your stamina barNever cut through a gas cloud without a gas absorber
FlashlightBattery drains while litCarry spare batteries; recharge only when needed
Fall damageHurts, then regenerates after a few secondsSafe to take small falls; big drops are not
Permanent damageGas and monster hitsHeal with a stitching kit, a healing balloon, or critter body parts
HealingTeammate limbs restore a little; a torso restores a lotLoot bodies when the run is going badly
RevivesCarry a dead teammate's head to Barry, or inject a revival syringe on the spotThe syringe is faster and also worth tribute

Your flashlight is a battery-powered tool, not a permanent light source. You'll find batteries around the map, and each one is a decision: deposit it toward the quota or burn it on beam time. If Mr. Light is active and your light is dead, you're effectively defenseless against her.

Two team tools round this out. The ping system marks a location for teammates, but it doesn't tag items and it isn't map-wide — it only helps people in the same room. And you can boost a teammate onto a ledge, the same way you'd pull someone up a wall, which turns vertical routes into group routes.

The Item Cheat Sheet: Keep, Use, or Deposit

Every single item in the Escape from Playtime playtest counts toward tribute. That's the core tension of the loot system: the battery that saves your flashlight is also quota progress. High-value finds should go to Barry; situational tools should stay in your hands until they solve a problem.

High-value deposit itemBest use
Bag of cementBank it — heavy tribute value
Playcare pastelsBank it — high tribute value
Playtime coinFound in chests; enormous tribute value
Boogie Bot broken bitsPure scrap, good quota filler
Critter partsPast critters' remains; Barry only
Critter corpseVery high tribute value
Revival syringeRevive a teammate instantly, or bank it for big tribute
Flashlight batteryRecharge your beam or deposit — your call
Utility itemWhat it does
Glow stick packLight dark rooms and mark a path back to Barry
Bunny earsHigher hops while running
Stitching kitHeal yourself or a teammate; one often spawns by the starting gate
Cat collarBell rings as you move so teammates can find you; stuck until you take fall damage

PFG 2000Nerf-style blaster that stuns friends and enemies
AirhornBlasts friends backward; overheats and pops if overused
AntidoteCures poison
Gas absorberClears a gas-filled room or corridor
Rope turretFires a zipline to a target point
Road flareMonsters won't cross a lit flare
Cardboard boxTemporary hiding spot
DecoyStalls monsters for a few seconds
Overcharged batteryFlashlight shock that stuns enemies and friends
Doughy bombExpands into a dough wall to block or climb
Energy drinkUnlimited stamina for a few seconds
Luft balloonLifts you to a destination, then pops
Colorful parasolSlows your fall
Bounce padThrowable high-jump pad
Healing balloonThrow at a friend or the floor to heal
Surprise boxMystery item — random loot pops out

LemonNo tribute value, no use, pure vibes

Everything is droppable, so hand items off instead of hoarding. If you're making deposit runs, drop low-value junk to make room for a cement bag or coin.

Modifiers, Demerits, and the Gas Pit

Clear a run successfully and you can randomly unlock a modifier that changes the next shifts. Modifiers are essentially run-wide modes, and they can help or hurt.

ModifierEffectVerdict
HardyActions like running, jumping, and climbing cost less staminaStrong pick — stamina is the main killer
Bully BarryDeposits cost either 50% more or 30% lessA gamble; bank early to find out which way it rolled

Demerits run the opposite direction. You earn one by leaving a shift early through the elevator or slide, or by failing to hit the required tribute before time expires. Collect three and your whole team drops into a pit that fills with red gas, where you climb to the top to win. Scattered items let you sabotage each other mid-climb. Gas exposure drains your stamina the longer you stand in it, so climb clean and don't linger. Demerits reset after any successful shift, which makes one bad run recoverable.

FAQ

How long is a shift in the Escape from Playtime playtest? Every shift runs 11 minutes. When the timer ends, the building begins filling with gas and you have one minute to reach an exit before the gas kills you.

Can I play the Escape from Playtime playtest with random players? No. The beta limits lobbies to Steam friends, so you'll need to add players before hosting. Public matchmaking isn't part of this build.

What happens if my team gets three demerits? You're dropped into a gas-filled pit and must climb to the top to escape. Items scattered around the pit let teammates sabotage each other's climbs.

Does the Escape from Playtime playtest include the full game? No. It's a limited build without lore, with only part of the puzzle set, enemy lineup, and critter roster. The Early Access release expands the character roster, zones, and enemy lineup, with more content arriving based on player feedback.

What's the fastest way to hit quota? Bank high-value finds like coins, pastels, cement, and corpses first, use the gate lever to deposit safely under pressure, and keep an energy drink on hand so a full sprint back to Barry doesn't leave you gasping.
